Shorter University's History

Shorter University was founded in 1873 by a pastor of the Rome Baptist Church who encouraged the active participation of church members in the school. In the early 1950s, Shorter University administrators and trustees recruited the first male students into the school that originally only admitted women. In the 1990s, Shorter University incorporated international programs, established the School of Professional Programs in the Atlanta area, and began offering an MBA degree program in business. Shorter University continues to pursue its mission to inspire adult students to make commitments to lifelong learning, responsible citizenship, and community leadership.
